Residents in Charnwood are being urged to support their local pubs, cafes and restaurants as Covid restrictions are eased from today (May 17).
The Government’s Roadmap means hospitality venues can once again open their doors and let customers inside for the first time since November.
Charnwood Borough Council has launched its Seat Out campaign to encourage residents to support their local hospitality venues in a safe and considerate way and observing Covid-secure measures and social distancing guidance.
For the campaign, a leaflet has been produced highlighting indoor and outdoor eateries in Loughborough town centre on a map. The charm of the hospitality sector in Charnwood’s towns and villages is also characterised on the handy, credit card-sized folded leaflets.
The leaflet will be available to residents and visitors and a digital version is on the Council’s website.
The Council is also creating some outdoor seating areas in Loughborough town centre using colourful benches featuring characters from children’s books.
Businesses are also being urged to get involved by sharing the Seat Out message on social media.
Cllr Shona Rattray, the Council’s lead member for business support, said: “Supporting our local hospitality through the Government’s roadmap steps is crucial and encouraging people to eat local through the Seat Out campaign is one of the many ways we can do this.
“Our local businesses have worked hard to make sure they are Covid-secure and have constantly adapted their establishments to adhere to all the changes demanded by the Government’s guidelines and rules.
“Many hospitality venues will be re-opening their doors to the public for the very first time this year.
“Whether it’s booking into your favourite restaurant, getting a take-out, or stopping at a café while shopping, I urge residents to dine safely and considerately and support local hospitality throughout the whole of Charnwood.
“While it is a positive step that indoor hospitality is opening, it is worth remembering that this is still with restricted numbers and social distancing guidelines.
“I would also strongly recommend hospitality businesses back the Seat Out initiative by sharing community messages with the Seat Out hashtag (#SeatOutCharnwood) and promote Charnwood hospitality.”
Loughborough town centre has also been decorated with additional lighting and bunting to create a more appealing environment.
John McCarthy, manager of The Griffin in Loughborough said, “We are very glad that the roadmap is going to plan as there was a bit of apprehension and uncertainty about when we can reopen but the Government announcement was such a relief. Pubs have been closed longer than open this year and it has taken its toll.
“We opened our outdoors in April with new seating in the front and an improved rear garden. Indoors, we have decorated and reupholstered, we still have all our safety measures in place and have been given the Covid-secure tick from the Council.
“Tables have been arranged to allow for social distancing and table service but indoors is still restricted numbers and we don’t have a lot of tables inside for groups of 6, so I would like to encourage people to also consider visiting in smaller numbers. Please be patient with our table service as it will take us longer to clear and sanitise tables and do the covid checks between each service.
“We’re glad to welcome customers back and we hope to be able to accommodate as many customers as safely possible. Looking forward, I can’t wait until it is safe for a customer can walk up to the bar and order a drink again. The Seat Out campaign is a really good idea and it’s great to see the sector is being supported."
Tim and Becci Garratt, managing directors at Slider Town Cocktail Bar & Restaurant in Loughborough said, “After 18 months of worrying, uncertainty and doubt. We are very excited to reopen our doors for both indoor and outdoor dining.
“During the lockdown, we adapted with the climate and started to offer takeaways, virtual cocktail master classes and cocktail deliveries and we launched our online store. We have enjoyed the challenge and will continue with many of the services we have adopted. We’re grateful for the all the support from our customers and can’t wait to welcome people back.
“The safety of our guests and our team is our main priority and we have put procedures in place to make our customers’ experience both safe and comfortable. Our tables are socially distanced with screens where necessary, we have a new one-way system, sanitiser stations at key points and NHS QR codes by the entrance. Customers now order through our app, and we have extended our outside area with more seating outdoors.
“Charnwood has a fantastic, passionate and welcoming hospitality scene with many having worked for years building up their business and like us their dream of owning or managing their own venue. However, without the support of the people of Charnwood many businesses will struggle to survive.
“Please accept our invitation on behalf of hospitality within Charnwood and support the Seat Out campaign and enjoy the ability to be social in a safe and controlled environment.”
The benches featuring characters from children’s books provide extra space for people to have a rest and perhaps enjoy some food. Residents may remember them from the Loogabarooga Festival, and they will be sited in front of Loughborough Town Hall, around the Fearon Fountain and in Queen’s Park.
The Council is also working with local hospitality businesses to give them better options to increase capacity on their own premises and 12 Charnwood businesses have been granted temporary pavement licences since August last year. This is on top of premises which already have licences for outdoor seating.
The changes to the Covid restrictions mean Loughborough Town Hall can open its Sock Gallery and box office on Monday May 17 and Charnwood Museum will also open its doors on Wednesday May 19.
The change in restrictions mean people can now dine indoors in groups of six or a mix of two households, and outdoors people can meet in groups of up to 30.
